Final Blog Relfection

I personally have spent a lot of time reading up on effects of technology in every day life. My doctor had recommended it for general stress relief, and it became somewhat of a hobby to catch up on. In this blog post I will take you through what I personally found important and how it helped! I quickly noticed I had phone anxiety https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6510111/  This article describes a legitimate issue called NOMOPHOBIA - when you do not have access to cellular connectivity.  While mine was not that severe, I recognized it similar to when I heard about smokers, where I was antsy and nervous without checking it or having it constantly.  This is when I took a moment to ask myself why I was checking it, to begin to break down the habit. I realized it was mostly to stay updated with what other people were posting. I had realized I felt bored without the constant checking.      I think the most interesting articles I read focused on how technology is making our genera

Cord Cutters

CORD CUTTING As a reader, ask yourself first your age, and then what tv shows you watch and how you watch them. If you are roughly under the age of 25, it is most likely you make use of streaming services. Over 1 million Americans have now switched from cable to online streaming.  When you think of online streaming, do you think of a lap top? That was the original fad, however, now tv providers are incorporating a more app based user experience, that takes the viewer right to the app options upon powering on the television.  Cable subscriptions are coming to an end. Advertising has caught on to this, and created a system I find very interesting. Cable television is not entirely gone, adults are still holding on, so therefore, television ads are more targeted to this demographic. Half of cable users are over 60 years old. On the other hand, tv streaming ads are generally targeted to a younger demographic. There are children today that will never grow up with cable television being a re

Tech Privacy

This blog was coincidental timing, as I just had an experience first hand with online social media presence. My dad has a consulting firm, he was using a specific software that scans a candidates online presence. He was showing me how they analyze different candidates based on their social media content results. Not that I had anything incriminating, but I immediately went to my accounts and skimmed through. I deleted things that COULD be taken the wrong way, such as holding a drink or something I would not love my future boss to see. I have always grown up watching my dad do this, however, watching it in real time really changed my perspective on privacy in the tech era.   It is frightening to think about the manipulation and invasion that happens daily. I work with photoshop a lot and have made joke pictures for friends replacing images and such. Thinking about it in this context it is scary to think how if I, a college student just learning the basics, can manipulate identity like

Tik Tok Diffusion

Diffusion theory is a perspective looking at how content, trends, information, ect. spreads. I found Tik Tok to be interesting mainly because I deleted my account early on and have noticed how hard it is to NOT have to use the app at some point. I personally did not see the difference enough between instagram to have this, because at heart, they are social media content platforms. This is key however, to my thoughts on diffusions theory.     I feel the actual user platform does not matter. I truly feel even if it had the most complex and annoying user system, it would still have soared. This is due to the process of trends. It simply matters who is putting the content out and the timing of that content. For example, Instagram, holding a global monopoly over the social media game, updated their format to include "reels" which are essentially, Tik Tok's. https://about.instagram.com/blog/announcements/introducing-instagram-reels-announcement#:~:text=Creating%20Reels,recordi

Reflection of presentation on Motion Pictures

Reflection of presentation on Motion Pictures: I found the early inspiration discussion about motion picture origins extremely interesting. There was a fierce curiosity in the entertainment industry with capturing movement to share. At this point, the closest development was a child’s flip book.   In the late 1800’s camera development was on its way, with very, very slow rate capturing abilities. However, another interesting point I saw in this presentation discussed how to access these frames once they are captures. Many do not think about all the effort put forth for the projector to also be invented.

The Telegraph

Samuel F. B. Morse had, in the saying of contemporaries, “obliterated time and space.” Morse created the famous known Morse Code which lead to his invention of the telegraph. He was an involved man, as an artist, politician, invented and much more. However, he was not a successful man up until his invention. His invention greatly shaped the evolution of the tech era. The times has a great article about his influence into modern society which I highly recommend reading. A quote from the article says, “The brainchild of one of the world’s last great polymath thinkers, telegraphy helped inaugurate the instantaneous, intensively-networked world we inhabit today.” Read more here! https://time.com/4307892/samuel-morse-telegraph-history/ How does it work? - Telegraphs sent a series of electrical signals via a telegraph wire. The signals could be heard by the operator on the opposite end of the wire as a series of long and short clicks. Morse Code represented letters of the alphabet with cli

Anti War Movement Reflection

Similar to many groups that gain wide spread support and create the trends for others to follow, these antiwar groups focus on using media to spread their message. This is challenging for groups that have a core focus on reprimanding the commander in chief and iconic role of the current POTUS. When trying to use media, there are obvious regulations we learned about, and trying to spread an anti POTUS message through media regulated by the government poses extreme challenges. It is somewhat unproductive for these groups, attempting to spread anti government media through government controlled channels. I feel this sheds light on how the government can control our perceptions of current events, in a frightening way. I read an article that mentioned the absence of a draft also deterring anti war movements from the spot light. The media currently shapes the draft as a heroic option rather than a forced decision, keeping it out of sight for most. When reading about the current BLM movemen
